Legendary sports cartoonist and columnist Bill Gallo, who created iconic characters like Basement Bertha, Yuchie and General von Steingrabber in the pages of the New York Daily News, has passed away at the age of 88.

I’m honored to have met him, whether in his office at the Daily News — which looked every bit like you’d expect a cartoonist’s studio to look — or at an amateur boxing match at Madison Square Garden.  He was always, always a kind gentleman, a soul infused with humor, a great smile and nary a scowl on his face, in person or over the phone.

New York City has lost an institution.  Rest in peace, Mr. Gallo.
