Etymology.

  • There’s a commercial talking about a supermarket in Brooklyn that got blown to “smithereens” by Superstorm Sandy and the voiceover guy says that “smithereens” is a word coined by Irish blacksmiths to refer to the “re-meltable shards of metal” they would gather from the floors of their forges to use for other items.
