This gentleman was carrying two flags - the Stars and Stripes, and another with the names of everyone who died at the World Trade Center.

Why? A flag represents a country. Something that represents something else, like the names of innocent civilians, is a demonstration/symbol/whatever (like the AIDS quilt). and I guess anything big enough to represent all the dead in the wars since 9/11 would be so big it would cover the ship like a tarp.

I’m a New Yorker. 9/11 was the worst day of my life. But the world is at war, and I think it behooves us to include our victims as well as our heroes. Or whatever terminology you choose for whomever.

Frankly, I think we’re all suckers.

If you’ve ever seen that flag, it has the names of all of the victims who died at the WTC, in very, very fine print.  In all likelihood, this gentleman was a relative of someone, or knew someone who died in one of those buildings, and I am not about to get into a philosophical argument with such a person over what flags he chooses to carry, and why.

We cannot ask every single person to be complete in their representations of what happened that day, or thereafter: it would be patently unfair, and unrealistic.  Assuming that, in fact, he is someone who lost a loved one or a friend at the WTC - again, that’s an educated guess on my part - we cannot, and should not intrude on how he chooses to express his grief, or his patriotism - especially if all he’s doing is carrying around a couple of God-damned flags.

And I do not consider myself a “sucker”, thank you very much.
