The Johnstown Flood of 1889 occurred when a dam burst 14 miles upstream, sending a wall of water that killed 2,209 people in and near Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Researchers are just now getting around to determining exactly why the dam burst, and just how much water there was. (Photo by the Associated Press; article via the New York Times)
