A smashed hull and debris field is seen atop the underwater rock struck by the liner Costa Concordia.  The hazard, which the ship’s captain claimed was not seen on navigational charts — a claim disputed by virtually all maritime experts — tore a 160-foot gash in the ship’s superstructure.  Italian newspapers report the captain, Francesco Schettino, later clambered over rocks to shore and caught a taxi to escape from the scene.
