The New York Times examines the evolving role of “white shirts” — high-ranking members of the New York City Police Department who are lieutenants, captains or inspectors — and how they’ve gone from commanders of the men and women in blue to enforcers who, in the case of the Occupy Wall Street protests, “lay hands on on protestors or initiate arrests.”
