Five fun facts about Hedy Lamarr:
- As well as being an actress, Hedy was also a scientist and inventor, and she co-invented an early form of spread spectrum communications technology, which is now used as the basis for WiFi and the technology used in some cordless telephones.
- Hedy is short for Hedwig
- Her first husband was a part-Jewish Nazi sympathiser and in 1937 she disguised herself as one of her maids and fled Austria for Paris to escape his controlling ways.
- On one occasion when running away from her fascist first husband, she hid in a brothel and when her husband came to search the place, a man entered the room and she had sex with him so she could remain hidden.
- She was arrested for shoplifting twice, in 1965 and 1991 (she was 75).
